3 Unexpected Reasons Why You Should Be Under Chiropractic Care

Low back pain, neck pain and headaches are the most common culprits that make people seek chiropractic care. This is not surprising as piling amounts of studies and research are strongly suggesting that regular chiropractic care delivers unparalleled results in terms of pain relief. What’s more astonishing is that, chiropractic has been found to be more effective than conventional medical treatments such as medications and steroid injections!

But did you know that chiropractic can offer you so much more than just pain relief?

Anyone with a functioning spine and nervous system can tremendously benefit from regular chiropractic care. Below are the top 3 unexpected reasons why you should see a chiropractor, regardless of your pain and symptoms.

1. Sedentary Jobs and Lifestyle

Office sedentary desk job
Increasing number of jobs have forced us to be desk-bound. Computers, tablets and smartphones have made humans much more efficient but at the same time, made us to be less physically active. We as a species are designed to be in motion, but all we do is sit.

Global studies show, on average, we sit 7.7 hours a day. Some studies went on further to reveal that people may sit up to 15 hours a day! These numbers are global. It affects all countries and regions, children to adults which exposes many people to certain health risks.

The chances are, you sit down a lot too. A seated position puts tremendous pressure on the spine, especially if you don’t practice proper ergonomics and posture. If you live a sedentary lifestyle or your work forces you to sit for long hours, find out how it may be affecting your health below.

Spinal Health

No one gets injured the real way anymore. One of the most common ways people become injured and “blow their discs” are from sitting for prolonged times or picking something up off the floor.
Sitting degeneration
Sedentary lifestyles and sitting long hours puts tremendous pressure on our discs. Intervertebral discs primarily function as shock absorbers and they are crucial to evenly distribute the load on our bodies. With sedentary lifestyle, our discs become worn out and may develop into bulging discs. This may eventually cause signs and symptoms of sciatica, neck pain and low back pain.

Use it or lose it

Your spine is made out of 24 different bones, all different shapes and sizes but just like your elbows and knees, they are joints too!

Ever heard the common saying, “Use it or lose it?” If you live a sedentary lifestyle, the joints of your spine will stop moving properly thus causing fixation, misalignment and premature degeneration of the spine. More and more studies are showing that even our kids and teenagers are suffering from spinal misalignments and premature degeneration due to their sedentary lifestyles.

Sitting is the New Smoking

Sitting simply wrecks your body. Studies show that sitting 6 or more hours per day makes you up to 40% likelier to die within 15 years than someone who sits less than 3. Sitting makes you fat, sitting shuts down key metabolic activities and processes, and makes you more susceptible to chronic and terminal illnesses such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer. See the infographic here.

2. History of Slips, fall and Auto-Accidents

Car accident whiplash chiropractic
Subluxation is a misalignment of one or more of the 24 vertebrae of the spine that cause nerve compression. Chiropractors are the only licensed health care practitioners that are capable of detecting, analyzing and removing subluxations without the use of drugs or medications. Second to poor posture, one of the most common reason of spinal misalignments (subluxations) are histories of slips, falls and motor vehicle accidents.

You might be wondering, “How does this affect me? I’ve never been involved in any major accidents in life.”

But did you know that kids and toddlers on average fall 104 times a day!

And did you know that even the most seemingly harmless car accidents can cause brain and spinal damage and lead to long term health issues?

Your body is constantly bombarded with external forces. When was the last time you had your spine checked? Without any apparent pains and aches, subluxations can rob you from achieving your optimal health and expressing your full potential.

3. Athletes and Performance

Chiropractors are widely accepted and regarded as one of the most important mentors and contributors for world class athletes. It’s not just because athletes are more prone to injuries, but it’s because world class athletes understand that regular chiropractic care can optimize their performance and give them that cutting-edge advantage over their competitors.

A good example is Jordan Speith, a twenty-one year old golf phenomenon who won his 2nd major gold tournament (2015 U.S. Open golf tournament). After winning the Master’s tournament in April, Jordan thanked the four most important members of his team in his victory speech: his swing coach, trainer, caddie and chiropractor.

Chiropractic adjustments removes nerve interference in our bodies. Subsequently it has been proven to improve concentration, clarity, hand-eye coordination reflexes, muscle strength and recovery.

It’s not just Jordan Speith! Other countless world class performers have benefited from optimizing their nervous system through chiropractic care. This includes the likes of Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Usain Bolt, Jerry Rice and Babe Ruth.

It’s true that chiropractic delivers unparalleled results in pain relief. But chiropractic offers so much more!

I believe that we were born to be more than who we are now. If you want to be the best person that you can ever be, you need to commit yourself to regular chiropractic care.

Pain relief is just the start.

Understanding Your United Healthcare Insurance Policy

united-healthcare-logoInsurance is difficult for the everyday person to understand and this is why most people do not know what their benefits are when they walk in our door. Although insurance is becoming more and more of a nightmare for people I highly recommend you know and understand your benefits. In the end it will help you save money.

Understanding UHC

I would have to say the insurance company that we have the most problems with in our office is United Healthcare (UHC). As a provider when we call for benefits we often get someone in another country to give us the benefits and makes it very difficult to understand them. This is why we recommend that you as a member call because you will most likely get a person who has english as a first language. Plus, if we both receive the same information then we know that we were probably quoted the correct benefits.

Now, here is where most people do not understand or like UHC. When we call on benefits they will tell us the maximum number of visits you are allowed in a calendar year. For example, they may give you 26. The problem is that you may not be allowed to use 26 visits per year.

So, how do you get your visits?

In order to get visits you fill out a form based on your symptoms and we submit that online for you. Then, a chiropractor paid by UHC behind a desk will give you a certain number of visits during a given time period. Commonly you will get 10 visits for the first two months. Once that time is up you are required to file another form and this continues over and over again for as long as you want to be seen and each time you submit you will get fewer and fewer visits.

At some point they will say that you have reached Maximum Therapeutic Benefit and will no longer give you visits. Also, keep in mind UHC will NOT pay for preventative care. So, if they see you coming once a month they will see that as regular care and deny you visits.

Self Pay

This is why we recommend our patients who are in need of more visits or want to focus more on prevention to take a few months off from submitting to insurance and pay out of pocket. I know this is not what you want to hear, but we don’t have any other options.

What is frustrating is that the majority of people in this predicament has an HRA that has plenty of money to cover their visits. Unfortunately, if the visit is not approved by insurance the HRA cannot be used. This is why we recommend that everyone also have a Flex Spending Account. If you do not know if these are options simply ask your employer to learn more.

If you ever have any questions about your insurance policy please ask next time you are in the office or give us a call at 515-277-2377. We want to help you find the most cost effective way for you to get the care that you need.

Upper Back Pain Relief

As a chiropractor I would say one of the most common complaints I hear from almost all patients is upper back pain. What is interesting is that usually it is not a real concern of theirs. It is the low back pain, headaches or neck pain that gets them in the door.

What is odd to me is that people really don’t see upper back pain, tightness and tension as a real issue. If it gets sharp or interferes with their daily life then they do something about it, but if it isn’t on that level it is expected. When I ask a person if they are having any upper back pain they almost always usually admit to having constant tightness in the upper back and shoulders. Their usual response involves them saying, “well of course I do”. It is as if I am crazy for even asking because it should just be assumed.

Common, but not normal

The truth is that upper back pain, although it is common, it is not normal. What I am saying is that even though a majority of adults have pain or tightness in those areas it doesn’t mean it is normal. It is a sign of dysfunction somewhere in the body. People are right in that it is related to stress, but it is even more related to posture.

I will admit that I am always looking at peoples’ posture wherever I go. It is amazing to me how bad our posture is as American’s. Sit at a wedding and look at the wedding party as they stand next to the bride and groom is one of the best examples. Shoulders are rolled forward and necks are jutted out especially as the ceremony reaches towards the end. All I can think is that person has to have a lot of tension headaches and at minimum tension in their upper back and shoulders on a daily basis.

Sitting WAY too much

We are like this for a few different reasons. First off, the majority of American’s sit all day long. They sit at work, to and from work, and then when they get home they sit and watch television. These very reasons are also contributing to our obesity epidemic. Did you know that if you are not up and moving for a minimum of 8 hours a day you are classified as sedentary?

Terrible form

Another reason we have terrible posture is that we have poor mechanics. If I step foot in a commercial gym I almost have to put side blinders on. It truly is painful to watch how terrible peoples form is on every lift imaginable. I often challenge people to squat because they claim they know how to. I would say 80% of the time their form is pretty terrible. Explains their knee pain, low back pain, and whatever pain they have. Doing a functional body movement wrong for reps creates problems and pain.

Treatment

If any of this sounds like you then you need to start doing something today to make a change. I work with many patients here at Price Performance Chiropractic to alleviate these very symptoms. Not only do I treat the affected area, but we discuss what they can be doing to make themselves better on their own. Here is what I do to help my patients with their upper back, shoulder and neck pain:

  • Adjust the cervical and thoracic spine
  • Perform muscle therapy on their neck, upper back and shoulders
  • Acupuncture with muscle stimulation attached to the needles
  • Discuss correct posture when sitting and addressing the need for posture breaks
  • Go over form and technique if they are physically active
  • Recommend exercises

I have found that doing the above with patients makes a huge difference not only in pain, but also quality of life. Granted you don’t have to do chiropractic, acupuncture and muscle therapy, but those that do see a dramatic improvement. If you are interested in learning more or have questions please feel free to call the office or send me an email.

3 Big Nutrition Mistakes Stopping you from Losing Weight

Trying to stay in shape or lose weight seems to be a constant struggle for most American’s today. As a chiropractor I speak with many patients who are unhappy with their current body. I enjoy working with people and encouraging them to make life-style changes to help them reach their goals. One of the first habits we look at is nutrition.

3 Big Mistakes

There are a lot of misconceptions out there about how to go about losing weight. Really, there is no clear cut answer and what works well for one person may not have as big of an effect for another. What you need to consider is do you want to just lose weight or do you want to lose fat? There is a big difference. Also, remember losing weight the correct way takes time. Here are the 3 biggest mistakes I see people making on a daily basis:

  1. Not consuming enough food
    • I will ask a person who is looking to lose weight what they eat on a daily basis and often they are not eating near enough food or they are lying to me.
  2. Eating the wrong foods
    • When people list off the foods they are eating usually they are consuming way too many carbohydrates and fats, and not eating enough protein.
  3. Timing of food
    • When you are eating foods is also important. Skipping breakfast, eating only a couple times a day, having snacks filled with carbs and fats, and having large dinners are recipes for asking your body to store fat.

The number one thing most people need to do is work on increasing their metabolism. If you are able to wake up and not eat until lunch time then I am 100% talking to you. Getting up and eating is one of the best ways to get your metabolism going. If you have any questions or would like a specific MACRO plan laid out for you I would be more than happy to help.

Why you Should be Putting Lemon in your Water

lemon essential oilWhen I was in chiropractic school I remember a few classmates telling me that I should consider putting lemon in my water.  Personally, I was not a fan of anything with a lemon flavor, and on top of it I hated when things float in my water so I never tried it.
Over the last few years I have adopted the philosophy of I will try anything once if I know it is good for me.  Lemon water was introduced to me again, but this time it was shown to me as an essential oils.  Not all essential oils are created equal and that is why you need to make sure that you are not ingesting them unless it is known to be safe.  That is why I choose to use Young Living oils.  I am not hear endorsing Young Living, but letting know that is the brand I have chosen to use.

Potency

Another reason I opted to use lemon essential oil in my water instead of actual lemons is because an essential oil is much more potent.  They extract their oil from the rind of the lemon, which is what houses most the nutrients.  It requires 3,000 lemons to produce 1 kilo of Young Livings lemon oil essential oil.  That is a lot of lemons!

 Quality

Lastly, I choose the oil over lemons because I know the quality of the oils.  They have a Seed to Seal process, which ensures purity.  Also, they do testing on their own products.  When you get a lemon you cannot be 100% sure of the quality of the lemon unless you are growing it yourself.  Furthermore, not having to buy lemons every week is one less thing to do.

So, you are probably wondering what are all the benefits of drinking lemon water?  Here are 11 of the commonly known benefits of putting lemon in your water.

  1. Gives your immune system a boost
  2. Excellent source of potassium
  3. Aids digestion
  4. Cleanses your system
  5. Freshens your breath
  6. Keeps your skin blemish-free
  7. Helps you lose weight
  8. Reduces inflammation
  9. Gives you an energy boost
  10. Helps to cut out caffeine
  11. Helps fight viral infections

Since being a part of the essential oil community I have heard a couple of very successful stories about how the Young Living essential oils.  In relations to lemon oils specifically I have heard how it has helped many people dissolve both kidney stones and gallstones.

In my opinion, I am more than willing to try something if I know it is safe and will not cause harm to my body.  Prevention is what I try to live by.  According to the Reference Guide for Essential Oils lemon is known for the following properties:

  • Anticancer
  • Antidepressant
  • Antiseptic
  • Antifungal
  • Antioxidant
  • Antiviral
  • Astringent
  • Invigorating
  • Refreshing
  • Tonic

Considering all the benefits I have just listed it makes it difficult to not want to start putting lemon in your water.

Young Athlete Back to Hitting Home Runs

Recently, I had a 10 year old male athlete come in complaining of back pain on the right.  The majority of the pain was located over the lower right rib cage area.  At first the pain was noticed while running, but started to become a constant pain and was tender to the touch.

While the patient was lying face down it was visually noticeable that there was hunching over the right rib cage.  Interestingly if he rotated his head to the left the hunching would diminish drastically.

Treatment

Due to his age I wanted to be as conservative as possible.  Also, children tend to respond very quickly and favorably to chiropractic care so I wanted to keep his treatments simple.

After getting him full spine adjusted 4 times he was pain free. His father reported that his son:

  • Wasn’t complaining of back pain
  • Could tell his son was playing baseball like he used to when he didn’t have pain
  • Hit a home run the past 2 weekends

If you are your children are complaining of back pain you should highly consider chiropractic.  It is a safe, all-natural approach to healthcare.

Peppermint for headaches, allergies, hot flashes, and more!

Peppermint is a very versatile essential oil that is reasonably priced, which is why it is one of the more popular oils.  Often you will smell it in the office because I use it with patients who suffer from headaches and tension in their neck and upper back.

Quality is Important

I have gravitated towards the Young Living essential oils for reasons of purity, potency, and the fact that they test their products for those very things.  The quality of a product is very important to me.  Also, due to them being pure you know that they are safe to be ingested internally unlike many other brands on the market.  I am not saying Young Living is the end all be all, but it is what I have chosen for myself personally and I am comfortable with recommending to my patient’s.

According to Young Living the properties of the peppermint essential oil are:

  • Analgesic
  • Antibacterial
  • Anticarcinogenic
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Antiseptic
  • Antispasmodic
  • Antiviral
  • Invigorating

How can you use peppermint at home?

  • Headaches: put 1-2 drops across your forehead, on your temples, and on the back of your neck down to the tops of your shoulders
  • Hot flashes: put 2-3 drops on your forehead, neck and down your arms
  • Upset stomach: rub 1-2 drops on your abdomen and also on the bottom of your feet.  You could also put it directly in your mouth or swallow them in a capsule.
  • Energy: place 1-2 drops in your palm and rub them together.  Then, place your hands up to your nose and inhale.
  • Sinus/Cold/Allergy: 1-2 drops in your palm and rub them together.  Then, place your hands up to your nose and inhale.
  • Weight control: sniff peppermint 1/2 hour before a meal or anytime you are hungry to help you suppress your appetite.
  • Medicine alternatives: Pepto-Bismol, Imodium-AD, Tums/Rolaids, Mylanta, Prilosec/Zantac, Tylenol/Motrin, Beano/Gas X, and Midol

If you suffer from any of the above conditions or find yourself using any of the above medications on a regular basis you may want to try using peppermint.  For some people they see great relief, while others see minor changes.  Either way, personally I am ways willing to try anything if I know that it is safe and has no side effects except improving my over-all health.

What to do if your baby spits up after feeding

Today I had the pleasure of adjusting one of my youngest patient’s Calvin.  How did Calvin become a patient of mine?  Well, his mother started to come see me just over a year ago.  When she found out she was pregnant she decided for her second pregnancy she wanted to utilize chiropractic because she knew its many health benefits during pregnancy as well as for giving labor, which she intended to do naturally without the use of drugs as she had done with the birth of her first child.

About Calvin…

He was born early July via an all-natural birth. Mom reports that the delivery went well, but like his older brother he tends to spit up after breastfeeding.  Also, he has a difficult time nursing on the right side compared to his left.

First adjustment:

I adjusted Calvin for the first time when he was 1 month old. I adjusted his neck, mid-back, and hips.  He was a little fussy, but his mom said that he had been that way most of the morning.  Immediately after being adjusted he fell asleep in the office for about 5 minutes.

Second adjustment:

They returned a week later and his mom reported that after his first adjustment he was not spitting up as much and was nursing better on the right side.  The same areas were adjusted as the first visit.  Calvin was calm during his adjustment and immediately belched after getting his mid-back adjusted.

Third adjustment:

It has been just over 3 weeks since his last adjustment and his mom said he did well again after being adjustment.  Showed the same improvements and they last longer this time.  It wasn’t until this week that he started spitting up again.  This time he was full of smiles throughout the entire adjusted.  He let one little belch out almost immediately after his mid-back was adjusted. Then, as I sat there with him for a minute and talked to his mom he let out another big belch.  It shows the immediate effects chiropractic tends to have on children.

If your infant often spits up after feeding then chiropractic care is something you should consider.  It is a safe, effective, and natural approach.
